Her name is Bridget. It means strength.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“I think my mother wrote it.”

“What do you mean you think?”

Bridget took the note out of her hand and stared at it. “Twenty-five years ago on Christmas Eve, I was left on the doorstep of a church in Needville, Texas with this note pinned to the blanket. It’s the only link I have to my family.”

Grace’s gut twisted into a knot. She had a million questions, but all she could utter was, “I had no idea.”

“No one does. I’ve never shared that with anyone. Until now.”

“What happened? Were you adopted?” She hoped Bridget would say that she’d been raised by a nice family and that, despite her rocky start in life, she’d been loved and cared for.

Bridget’s face tightened. “I spent the next eighteen years getting tossed from one foster family to another. Some of them were great, but for whatever reason it never lasted.”

She wished she could do something to erase the pain in Bridget’s eyes. She placed her hand on Bridget’s arm and gently squeezed. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”

Bridget ran fingers through her hair. “I guess being around your family, seeing how close you all are, and how excited everyone is about the baby reminded me of what I never had.” She smiled weakly. “See. Told you I was feeling sorry for myself.”

“It’s natural that being here would bring up emotions. I can’t imagine what you went through, but it made you into the amazing person you are today.”

Bridget looked at her like she didn’t know what she meant.

“You’re an independent, strong, ambitious, kind woman,” she said. “I’ve relied on my family so much over the years, but you’ve done it all by yourself.”

Bridget sank into the chair, looking embarrassed by the compliment.

“Thank you for showing me the note and sharing what happened,” she said.

Bridget buried her face in her hands. “I’m so going to regret this in the morning.”

“Hate to tell you, but it is morning.”

She rubbed gentle circles on Bridget’s back. Even though her mind raced with questions, Bridget looked too exhausted to divulge anything further. What she needed now was comfort, and Grace was glad she was the one to offer it.
